Israel Day 5

This morning we packed our bags and headed east through the desert. towards Masada. We saw lots of beautiful countryside.

These look like Palm Trees but they are not. They are dare trees. 9 different  kinds of dates are grown in Israel.

Next stop….Masada

An ancient fortification in Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. Herod the Great built two palaces for himself on the mountain.

When Rome invaded Jerusalem Jewish rebels fled and took refuge here.

Roman troops attacked Masada which lasted for several months and ended in mass suicide of the 960 (woman & children included) rebels who were hiding there. They would rather die by suicide at their own hand than by death from Herod.

Some of us road the trolly cart up to the top while some hiked 1.9 miles to the top!

Aerial view of the hiking trail from the cable car!

After we left Masada we headed toward Jericho for lunch. We stopped by a factory where they make Dead Sea beauty products.

On the way to lunch we saw a few cool things!

Someone rode their camel to the store!

The 1st cave The Dead Sea Scrolls were found. A man threw a rock in a cave and hear something break. This was papyrus, which the scrolls were written on. He didn't realize what it was and his goats ate some of them.  So, they began selling the jars with scrolls for pennies. Antique dealers realized what it was and sold it to the United States...who eventually sold it back to Israel.

Lunch in Jericho was delicious! After lunch we headed for the Dead Sea. On our way there we passed the Mount of Temptation where Jesus was tempted.

At the Dead Sea we hopped on a camel “Pistachio”

After our camel ride we got in the Dead Sea! It was such a surreal feeling! Floating was effortless! You really how to to exert effort to stand up!

Jenny P and I thought we would make sure to get our dose of minerals and
covered ourselves in mud!

🤣 It looks like I’m walking on the water!
